Step 1: Register your authentication option
Step 2: Verify your authentication setup
Step 1: Configure MFA on your account
A. Read through the following notifications before doing the actual registration.
Note: If you see this displayed, go directly to Step 2
Note: If asked to verify your identity by entering in your company email address and the password you use to log onto your PC.
Note: When asked to install the Microsoft Authenticator application, skip the step if it is already installed. If you already use another authenticator (like Google Authenticator) you can click “I want to use a different authenticator app”
Note: When asked to scan the QR code, scan this from the authenticator app on your smartphone (not from the camera app on your smartphone).
Note: When you first open the authenticator application you are asked a few questions.
[You should allow notifications and skip adding a personal account]
Note: When prompted for account type, select 'work account'
Note: When asked, allow Authenticator to access the camera
CRITICALLY IMPORTANT NOTE: When asked to test signing in DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP. The Authenticator app on your smartphone should be asking you to approve the sign in. Click the approve button to complete this test.
B. Using a Windows computer, click the following link to open the MFA registration page: https://aka.ms/mfasetup
C. Follow the prompts on the page. Keep following the instructions and clicking Next on each page until you see the following 'Success!' page.
Step 2: Verify your authentication setup
If you clicked Done on the previous step, you should see the Security info summary.
Note: If you closed that window already, you can use the following link to open it: https://aka.ms/mfasetup
You should see something like the following graphic. An authenticator app should be set as the default
sign-in method. If you see the correct default sign-in method, then you have completed this verification and no additional steps are needed.
If Authenticator is not set as the default, do the following:
A. Verify that your option is listed under the “+ Add method” link.
Note: “Phone – Text” and “Phone – Call” are simply listed as “Phone”
B. If your option isn’t listed, click the “+ Add method” link to add it.
C. Click the “Change” link and follow the prompts to set your option as the default.
D. Make sure that all options listed are familiar (for example, there shouldn’t be any unknown phone numbers or
email accounts)
What to expect going forward
Once MFA is enforced on your account, you may be prompted to use this 2nd authentication method under certain
circumstances (for example when opening an application from a device outside of the office). The prompts may look
different depending on which application is used, however, what they ask for should remain the same.
When you see a prompt to approve authentication, that dialog box will also contain a number. From the Authenticator app, you will be required to enter that number before you are allowed to hit the approve button.
From the authenticator app enter the number shown above and then click Yes.
At this point you will be authenticated and the initial dialog box will close automatically.
