Problem:

InDesign was having major delays or crashing. Copying the InDesign file off the network share onto the local drive made no difference. It didn't matter which InDesign file was open.

Other programs worked normally. Network access was normal. No noticeable processes were monopolizing CPU time.

Solution:

This looked like an InDesign issue.

  1. Close InDesign
  2. Go to C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe.
  3. Rename the InDesign folder.
  4. Exit. Start up InDesign. It will create a new InDesign folder with fresh links.

Note: if the user has any preferences or other customizations, they will be gone from the new InDesign folder. However, if this solves the problem, the new InDesign folder can be renamed, the old one put back temporarily so that those preferences can be exported then put in the new folder later.

Eventually, the old InDesign folder should be deleted.
